Polycrystalline (also "multi-crystalline") solar cells are produced by casting molten silicon into blocks, then slicing. Recognizable by bluish color and visible crystal boundaries. Poly dominated the 2010-2018 market but is now largely obsolete for new projects — mono reached cost parity and offers 4-6% higher efficiency. Any 2026 new-project specifications calling for polycrystalline should be questioned. Only surviving niche: budget residential in emerging markets with space constraints.
